Third-Quarter Earnings Beat Estimates
Adjusted earnings came in at $9.18 per share, well ahead of the $7.42 analyst consensus. Revenue slipped slightly to $12.41 billion but still topped expectations of $11.38 billion, according to market data.
Core income increased 4% year over year to $1.95 billion. Higher favorable prior-year reserve development and investment income did the heavy lifting.
Travelers also returned $1.8 billion to shareholders, including $1.5 billion in share repurchases and $261 million in dividends.
Adjusted book value per share climbed 15% to $172.47. Operating cash flow reached $3.9 billion for the quarter and $8 billion year to date.
Catastrophe Losses Rise, Underwriting Improves
Catastrophe losses increased to $538 million before tax from $402 million a year earlier. Tornadoes and hailstorms in the central U.S. drove most of that.
Even so, the combined ratio improved to 86.8% from 87.3%, reflecting favorable prior-year reserve development. Anything below 100% means the company made an underwriting profit, and 86.8% is comfortably in the good zone.
Net written premiums were flat at $11.5 billion.
Net investment income rose 6% to $1.1 billion before tax, supported by higher yields and growth in invested assets.
Insurance Segments Deliver Strong Results
Business Insurance reported record third-quarter income of $1.04 billion. Net written premiums rose 4% to $5.9 billion, excluding the impact of the Canadian business sale. The segment's combined ratio stood at 90.9%.
Bond & Specialty Insurance generated record income of $309 million, with a combined ratio of 77.3%. Net written premiums climbed 12% to $1.2 billion, helped by growth in management liability and surety insurance.
Personal Insurance reported income of $706 million on $4.4 billion in net written premiums. Its combined ratio improved to 83.5%, while the underlying combined ratio reached 76.7%.
AI Investments And 2027 Outlook
Travelers keeps pushing artificial intelligence deeper into claims processing and underwriting to improve efficiency and manage rising liability costs.
In one pilot program, more than 80% of unrepresented claimants who were offered a digital claims resolution tool actually engaged with it. That is a striking adoption number for an industry where customers usually just want to talk to a human.
Management noted that the fourth-quarter auto underlying loss ratio has historically run 5 to 6 percentage points above the average of the first three quarters, reflecting winter weather and holiday driving.
Travelers forecasts after-tax fixed-income investment income of $875 million for the fourth quarter, bringing the 2026 total to $3.3 billion. The company expects that figure to exceed $3.6 billion in 2027.
A cyber reinsurance agreement effective Oct. 1 is expected to reduce net written premiums by $165 million in the fourth quarter and $230 million in 2027, with minimal impact on earnings.
Management expects disciplined underwriting, higher investment income and continued technology investments to support performance through 2027.
TRV Price Action: Travelers shares were up 1.01% at $387.76 at the time of publication on Friday. The stock is approaching its 52-week high of $398.69, according to market data.
